34 oil thieves convicted


THE Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps on Friday said it secured 34 convictions recently in its fight against oil theft and pipeline vandalism in Rivers State.

Barely 52 days after the launch of Light Up Lagos project by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of the state Police Command, weekend, arrested a suspect attempting to steal the cables.

Hoodlums, suspected to be sea pirates, have killed an executive member of Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Mr. Diepreye Peters.

A suspected cable thief, Obaji Christopher, has told operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command that he stole an armoured cable for the Light Up Lagos Project to raise money to settle down himself in Lagos State.

Court jails man 108 years for assaults on children


A court in Turkey has sentenced a Turkish man to 108 years in jail for sexually assaulting at least eight Syrian children at a flagship refugee camp, reports said on Saturday.

The 29-year-old man, identified only as Erdal E., worked as a cleaner at the tented refugee camp in Nizip in the southern Gaziantep province near the Syrian border.
