Controversies in Ondo over death of teenager

Agbeluyi

The death of Wumi Agbeluyi, a 20-year-old student of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State and native of Ijare in Ifedore Local Government Area
has continued to generate controversies in both the community and school as tongues have continued to wag on the circumstances that led to her death.

Speculations are rife that Agbeluyi died after an herbalist had allegedly assisted her to terminate four months pregnancy.

Detectives in the state Police command have reportedly picked up the herbalist who allegedly put the deceased in the family way and in a desperate bid to terminate the pregnancy gave her some concoction to drink in order to flush i t down . An orphan, she was said to be the only child of an herbalist.

The herbalists whose identity could not be ascertained, it was gathered, is currently being quizzed by detectives at the Special Investigative Bureau (SIB) of the command.

The suspect, according to findings, is an apprentice to the father of the deceased when he was alive. It was gathered that the suspect has been showing interest in the deceased before her father’s death but was hindered because the late father disapproved of the relationship.

Following the demise of her father last year, the suspect walked his way into her heart and a relationship ensued between them.

Some years into the relationship, the unexpected reportedly happened and the suspect reportedly prepared a concoction for his lover to terminate the unwanted pregnancy he reportedly claimed responsibility for.

It was gathered that the lovers agreed that they were not ready to be parents, hence the option of an abortion. The deceased was said to have taken the concoction and after some days, she developed severe abdominal pain.

Sensing that trouble was knocking at his door, the suspect was said to have rushed her to a private hospital where the doctor who was recently picked up and quizzed by detectives helped them to evacuate the remnants of the pregnancy.

After the flushing by the doctor in the private hospital, her persistent complaint of abdominal pain made the suspect to relocate her to the state General Hospital.

While all these were happening, the deceased did not confide in any individual except her room mate in the hostel in school. The deceased, according to sources, informed her room mate that the suspect gave her a concoction to drink and that the pain started since then.

However, reports had it that the lovers also did not open up to the doctors that attended to her at the state hospital until she gave up the ghost. It was after she died and taken back to Ijare for burial that the cause of her untimely death was exposed.

The matter was later reported to the traditional ruler of Ijare, the Olujare of Ijare who advised them to lodge a complaint with the Police. The suspect and the medical doctor were later picked up and detained.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph said the suspect was in police custody, assuring that the matter will be thoroughly well investigated and the findings would be made public.
