Police arraign two drivers for stealing empty beer crates

The Police arraigned two drivers at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for stealing 723 empty crates of beer valued at N950,000 from Fafem Haulage Nigeria Ltd.

The defendants, Taiwo Adebayo, 35 and Bolaji Babalola, 27, both drivers for Fafem Haulage Nigeria Ltd, were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

The defendants, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, were granted bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the defendants committed the offenses at Fafem Haulage Nigeria Ltd at No. 469, Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, Abule-Egba, Lagos on February 10.

Ayorinde said they conspired with others still at large and stole the empty crates.

“The transport company had loaded one of their trucks with 723 crates of Nigeria Breweries’ Goldberg beer and asked the accused to deliver them (the crates) to customers at Ibadan in Oyo State.

“Investigations revealed that the accused delivered the goods and diverted the empty crates to an unknown destination,’’ he said.

Ayorinde said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The New Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year imprisonment for offenders.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.J. Awope, adjourned the case till April 11.
