The Rector, Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Dr. E.C. Sogbaike, has warned the students of the institution against indecent dressing, cultism and examination malpractices, stressing that any student found wanting risked expulsion or rustication for a period of not less than one year.
Sogbaike, who said indecent dressing, cultism and examination malpractices constituted a breach of the institutions matriculation oath taken by the students, disclosed that the institution had special committees set up to try erring students.
A statement by the institution on Thursday quoted the rector to have sounded the note of warning at the 14th matriculation ceremony of the institution, which held on February 19.
“The polytechnic shall not relent in its efforts at stamping out social vices like cultism and provocative and seductive dressing,” Sogbaike said.
The rector congratulated the new entrants into both the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes for the year 2015/2016, noting that they were just a fraction of the number of candidates who had applied to the institution.
She urged the successful students to work hard in order to justify the opportunity given to them by the institution.
The rector recalled that Delta State Polytechnic, which started with only three ND programmes in 2002, now had 12 ND courses and 8 HND courses, all fully accredited and approved by the National Board for Technical Education.
She thanked the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for supporting the institution both financially and in terms of creating an enabling environment for it to operate.
The Registrar of the institution, Mr. Benson Omonode, who administered the Matriculation Oath on the fresh students, also advised them not to be involved in cultism and other anti-social behaviours, sayings any student caught in such acts would be shown the way out of the polytechnic.
