Robber on watchlist dies during shootout


A suspected robber, who had been on the watchlist of the Lagos State Police Command for two months, has been killed during a shootout in the Trinity, Apapa area of the state.

The robber, whose name the police had yet to ascertain, had shot at a corporal, Adetayo Ayeni, at about 4pm on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the corporal had responded, during which the robber died.

A police source told our correspondent that the robber, who tried to rob a woman that had just left a bank, used to operate alone on a motorcycle, armed with a pistol.

He said, “The robber was the first to shoot the corporal. The policeman was hit below his abdomen.

“He was injured, but he was quick to respond. The robber was shot dead, while we rushed Ayeni to the hospital.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the robber’s pistol, with seven rounds of ammunition, had been recovered.

She said, “The robber has been on our watchlist for two months. He was always in suit and carried a bag on his back and he would ride a motorcycle.

“He usually targeted customers leaving banks’ premises.”
