High tension cable snaps, kills five in Niger

No fewer than five persons were confirmed electrocuted at Kuta in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State when a high tension cable snapped and fell on their buildings.

Eyewitnesses said the cable snapped following a rainfall that lasted for about 15 minutes.

The witnesses added that the victims were also burnt because the cable was from the Shiroro Hydro Electric Dam.

According to them, the cable snapped because the contractor who handled the project did not do it to specifications.

They said instead of the contractor to use a full 100mm high tension wire, he made use of 40mm cables, which made it easier for them to snap after the rainstorm.

The Niger State Government has, however, ordered an investigation into the incident.
