Lagos seals CWAY, others over regulatory non-compliance

The Lagos State government on Friday said it had sealed the premises of CWAY Nigeria Drinking Water Science Technology Company and Figol Water in various locations in the state for not complying with regulatory guidelines.

The government in a Facebook post on Friday said the exercise, which was led by the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission, Mr. Kabiru Abdullahi, was part of efforts to ensure compliance with the state groundwater quality control regulation and the state drinking water quality standard.

Abdullahi was quoted as saying CWAY was sealed for non-declaration of all its facilities and non-compliance as stipulated in the regulatory guidelines of the Lagos State Water Sector Law 2004. He said government would leave no stone unturned to ensure that all stakeholders in the water sector complied with the guidelines as stipulated by the law.

He added that the state was determined to ensure that there was no incident of water borne diseases in the state, as well as improve the standard of living of the people and promote safety culture at all times.

“The administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, being a very responsive and responsible government, would no longer fold its hands and watch the pollution of the groundwater through indiscriminate abstraction and illegal borehole drilling that is polluting the groundwater on a daily basis,” he was quoted as saying.

He said by 2020, the present 33 per cent water provision in the state would reach 100 per cent, whilst calling on borehole drillers and water service providers to get permits for their activities.

When our correspondent reached out to a staff of CWAY on the phone, she denied the development, saying “We are not aware of such.”

But the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, confirmed the development to our correspondent on the phone on Friday, saying “That is the position of government.”
