‘I poisoned pot of soup because of insult’

The suspect with the pot of soup

A family of three escaped death in Ajegunle area of Lagos State yesterday following a failed attempt by a neighbour to kill them with rat poison. The suspect, one Gordon Daniel, had deposited the rat poison into his neighour, Mrs. Saidat Shakiru’s pot of soup.

The mystery behind the sinister motive was unraveled yesterday by the traditional ruler of Aiyetoro 1 community in Ajegunle, Baale Saheed Fakunle, who investigated deep into the circumstances surrounding the pot of soup suddenly emitting the offensive odour of ‘Sniper’, an efficacious poison for rats and other rodents.

It was gathered that the mother of one, Saidat, was cooking after her husband Shakiru had gone to work in the afternoon of Tuesday.According to a source, “four tenants lived on the ground flour of the one-storey building, situated at Baale Aiyetoro Street, while the landlady and her children occupy the top floor.

“On the fateful day, only Sadiat and the suspect were at home when she was cooking the soup. The woman went outside to buy something and before she came back, Daniel had allegedly doused some substance suspected to be sniper into the soup Sadiat was cooking.

“When the woman opened the pot, she perceived an offensive smell emanating from the soup, and immediately sensed foul play. The angry woman drew the attention of the landlady to what she had observed. Her landlady asked whom she suspected. Since there was nobody at home, she accused Daniel of the deed.”

When her husband, Shakiru returned from work, she explained the development to him. The matter was brought before the traditional ruler of the community, Baale Saheed Fakunle, who called all the parties involved to state their case before handing the matter over to the policemen attached to Ajegunle police station.

According to a police source, they immediately swung into action, taking away the suspect, Daniel and the poisoned pot of soup to the station.Daniel told policemen at the station that it was the devil that pushed him to commit the heinous act.

According to the suspect, “the woman has been insulting me over electricity bill. I don’t know what got over me. So, I decided to put sniper inside their soup to punish her. I am sorry. I regret what I have done. She insulted me so much because of the electricity bill if not I don’t have any problem with her and her husband.”

The Lagos State Police Command through the Divisional Police Officer of Ajegunle police station, Usman Gusau, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, in Yaba.

The landlord of the building occupied by both the complainants and the suspect, Mr. Taiye Aroyewun, expressed his displeasure over the action of his tenants. He said: “The man must be a mad man to have attempted to wipe out a family. Now that he had been caught, he has been pleading and trying all he could to settle the matter but everybody refused because he is a wicked man who committed a wicked act. If I forgive him today, somebody else may fall victim of his wickedness. Let him go to SCID, Panti and explain what his sniper was doing inside another man’s pot of soup.”
