Twenty three suspects were paraded on Friday by the Ogun State Police Command for various offences ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, illegal possession of arms to murder and cultism.
Parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, said the suspects were arrested from various locations in the state with at least 21 guns, which include three AK47 rifles.
Among the suspects was a member of a gang of robbers/kidnappers terrorising residents of Oyo, Lagos and Ogun states, Richard Abraham.
Iliyasu said the operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Squad, who received an information on the hideout of the notorious gang on Monday, August 22, embarked on an operation to arrest the suspects.
On sighting the operatives, he said the robbers engaged the police in a gun duel.
Abraham was arrested in the process, while other members of the gang escaped.
However, the FSARS recovered one AK47 rifle, loaded with 60 rounds of ammunitions, three pump action guns, one cut to size double-barrelled gun, one cut-to-size single-barrelled gun and one unregistered Toyota Corolla.
Also paraded for armed robbery were Adewale Ajeigbe and Ibrahim Kareem, who were suspected to be among the gang terrorising residents of Ogijo and Sagamu areas of the state.
The FSARS was said to have stormed their base at Igbo-Olomu area in Ikorodu where the suspects opened fire on them. Ajeigbe was said to have been wounded in the encounter. He was arrested with an AK47 rifle, and he later led the police to one of their hideouts in the Lagos garage at Ijebu-Ode, where their kingpin, Kareem, was arrested.
Also, two suspected robbers, who were said to be members of a gang planning to rob Sabo area of Abeokuta on Monday, August 15, were also paraded
Items recovered from them were one pump action gun, one revolver pistol, one Lar rifle, and one 9mm ammunition.
A suspect, Kayode Solomon, who allegedly killed a 60-year-old woman, Fadairo Sherifat, in Owode Egbado area on Thursday, August 25, was equally paraded. The suspect, who spoke in incoherent manner to journalists, confessed to the crime in one breath and denied it in another.
On Wednesday, August 31, the operatives also stormed a kidnappers’ den at Ijebu Igbo, where a victim, Anoma Banji, was rescued and two suspects arrested.
Also, a 54-year-old woman, Idowu Olupinla, a founder of a white garment, Adura Migba Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ijoko, Ota, was paraded for allegedly running a prostitution ring, using teenagers.
Olupinla denied the allegation. She was however confronted by three of her victims, who said she used one of the rooms in her apartment as a brothel, where different men, including male members of the church slept with them.
Iliyasu said one Haruna Saidat aged 16 years and three others, lodged complaints against the suspect for using them for prostitution and sending other young girls to neighbouring countries for the same purpose.
Also paraded was one Kazeem Alowolodun for alleged robbery at a boutique at Ita Alapo area, Ijebu Ode. The police boss said the suspect had pretended to be a customer before robbing the owner of the shop with a iron spraying gunner.
Iliyasu said the suspect had threatened to shoot the owner of the shop and a female customer, and he later robbed them of a sum of N65,000. The woman raised the alarm, and the suspect was arrested.
Four other suspects paraded were accused of terrorising residents of Abeokuta and its environs. One pump-action gun and a Pathfinder SUV were recovered from them.
Four teenagers arrested at J4 area, were also paraded for allegedly stealing a bus.
