One dies, 12 houses set ablaze in Kogi


One farmer was killed, while12 houses were set ablaze following a clash between members of a vigilance group and some residents of Ejinya Abakpa and Ejinya Eheche communities in the Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State on Saturday.

Sources told our correspondent that trouble started on Thursday when a man, identified as Noah Ado, was stopped by members of the vigilance group, but refused to stop.

A source said, “The man, Ado, ran to his house and brought out a double-barrelled gun. While the men of the vigilance group tried to disarm him, he fired a shot which hit a farmer, Augustine Gabriel, who was passing by.

“The victim was rushed to a hospital, but died along the way.”


Following the killing of Gabriel, angry youths from the community of the deceased farmer stormed Ejinya Eheche village, where the incident happened, and reportedly razed 12 houses.”

It was learnt that residents of Ejinya Eheche had deserted the community after the attack.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Police Command, William Aya, confirmed the incident, stating that policemen had been deployed in the affected communities to restore normalcy.

“Investigation is, however, ongoing into the incident,” he added.
