The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control on Friday shut a factory in Makurdi, Benue State, which it accused of manufacturing fake cosmetic products.
Operatives of the agency also arrested an alleged distributor of counterfeit products at Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area.
According to the Chief Regulatory Officer, Enforcement Operations, NAFDAC, Mr. Uche Chidi, who led the operation, the manufacturer of the counterfeit products deceived unsuspecting customers by labelling the products with Lagos and Onitsha addresses.
Chidi told journalists that the team acted on a tip-off, adding that the location of the alleged fake factory was traced with “high intelligence because the producer never gave an authentic address.”
He added, “We are here because our office in Lagos received an information about the suspected faking by some people in Makurdi. We came and the report has been confirmed.
“On arrival at this place, we discovered, as reported, the production of counterfeit and unregistered products in the range of body lotion, hair food and conditioners, creams, jellies and perfumes.
“After conducting our search, we discovered that all the products were labelled with Lagos and Onitsha addresses and without dates, while some had no addresses at all; just to confuse the innocent members of the public.”
He added that the arrested distributor of fake products would be taken to Onitsha to identify the source of the products, while the owner of the factory in Makurdi, who was absent at the time of the raid, was said to have been invited to NAFDAC office in Lagos for questioning.
