Bank manager charged with stealing customer’s N6m

A former United Bank of Africa (UBA) Plc Operations Manager, Bolaji Akanni, was yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing N6million from a customer’s account.

Akanni, 35, who lives at 4, Tola Olojede Street, Meiran, Lagos was arraigned by the Lion Building Police Division, Obalende, before Magistrate Abimbola Komolafe.

The former accounts officer is standing trial on a two-count charge of forgery, fraud and stealing.

Prosecuting police Inspector Abayomi Abass said the defendant committed the offence on January 9, at UBA’s 12/14 Broad Street Lagos Island branch, during work hours.

Abass said Akanni, with intent to defraud the bank, forged the signature of a customer, one Ogalla Chizoba, through which he stole the cash.


The offence, he added, is punishable under Sections 363 and 285 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Akanni pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Komolafe granted him N2million bail, with two sureties in the like sum. The sureties must be managers of a reputable institution, have landed property within Lagos Island, or be gazetted resident chiefs.
