An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court on Monday in Lagos sentenced 20-year-old Jamiu Saheed to six months imprisonment after he was found guilty of robbing a woman at knife-point.
The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin-Williams, who pronounced the verdict, convicted Jamiu for conspiracy and stealing a phone, an ATM card and N8, 850 cash all valued at N26, 850.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused at his first arraignment on April 4, had pleaded guilty to the two-count charge.
He later changed his plea on the next adjourned date and this prompted the magistrate to speed up his trial.
Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde, the Prosecutor, had earlier informed the court that the accused committed the offences by robbing a woman, Mary Idu, at knife-point on March 27 at about 8.30 p.m. at UPS Bus Stop on Oshodi-Oworonshoki Expressway, Lagos.
He told the court that the accused with others still at large who were armed with knives and cutlasses, robbed Idu of her phone, an ATM card and N8, 850.
“The complainant was able to raise an alarm and passers-by helped to apprehend Jamiu while others escaped.”
The offences, Olatunde noted, contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal law of Lagos State, 2015.
