A 41-year-old woman, Victoria Oshi, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by a High Court in Oyo State for trafficking three girls from Enugu State to work as commercial sex workers.

It was learnt that Oshi lured the victims – two teenagers and one 20-year-old – to Ogbomosho, Oyo State, sometime in 2010, promising to make them sales girls. The victims, however, ended up working as commercial sex workers for Oshi, after which the matter was reported to the National Agency for Prohibition in Trafficking in Persons.

Oshi was subsequently arrested and charged to court after which a series of hearings started.

According to a statement by the NAPTIP Director of Press and Public Relations, Josiah Emerole, the convict was sentenced by Justice M. A. Adegbola on Wednesday for “procurement and sexual exploitation of three victims of human trafficking.”

Emerole said, “Operatives of the NAPTIP in 2010 arrested Oshi alongside her accomplice, 75-year-old Peter Idowu. Oshi was arraigned in court by NAPTIP on a nine-count charge while Mr. Peter Idowu, the owner of one of the hotels, faced a one-count charge, all under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act of 2003.

“Following a trial that lasted over six years, Hon. Justice M. A. Adegbola on Wednesday, sentenced Oshi to five years’ imprisonment. The sentence will run from the day of judgment. The judge however, discharged Mr. Peter Idowu due to his age.”
