A 31-year-old man, Akinpelu Abbas, and one Opakunbi Timileyin, 22, have been brought before a Lagos State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikeja, for allegedly stealing 310 bags of cashew nuts.

The police said the goods, valued at N15.5m, were diverted by the suspects along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos.

The suspects were arraigned on two counts bordering on conspiracy and theft before a magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi.


PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were engaged by a company, Olan Nigeria Limited, to deliver the goods to some parts of the country.

The police prosecutor, lnspector Simeon Imhonwa, said the suspects committed the offence between March 1 and May 30, 2017.

The charges read, “That you, Akinpelu Abbas and Opakunbi Timileyin, and others at large, between March 1 and May 30, 2017, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; stealing, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

“That you, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal 310 bags of cashew nuts valued at N15,500,000.00, property of Olan Nigeria Limited, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 287(5)(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected summary trial.

The presiding magistrate, Osunsanmi, granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

She said the sureties must show evidence of two years tax payment and own verifiable property in the state.
