The Enugu State Police Command says it has arrested a suspect that impersonated a bank customer in order to steal money sent from abroad.

The command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Sunday that the 23-year-old suspect was an undergraduate from Amaigbo village, in the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Amaraizu explained that the suspect went to a bank on Okpara Avenue in Enugu to cash $800 sent from someone abroad.

“When he was asked by a bank worker to provide a proof of identification, he presented an identity card bearing the name of Peter Eleng, who is the beneficiary.

“He had, however, superimposed his photograph on that of the beneficiary and presented himself to be Peter Eleng.

“It soon became obvious that he was trying to withdraw money sent to another person by impersonating the beneficiary,” the police spokesman said.

He added that investigation further showed that the account number he presented belonged to someone else.

“The police hereby advise members of the public to be careful on how they disclose their bank details and vital personal information,” Amaraizu said.
