A Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrate’s Court on Thursday sentenced Sule Abdullahi, a mechanic of Gwari village, Abuja, to four weeks’ imprisonment for theft.
A Senior Magistrate, Mr Teribo Jim, however, gave the convict an option to pay a N5,000 fine and warned him to desist from committing crime.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Jim also ordered the convict to pay N30,000 as compensation to the complainant in the case.
Abdullahi was convicted after he pleaded guilty to the offence of stealing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr. Gabriel Musa, had told the court that one Moris Gwale of Mpape, Abuja, reported a case of theft of money at the Mpape Police Station on November 20, 2017.
He said the convict stole N30,000 from the 76,000 that the complainant had in his car, which he took to the convict for repair.
The prosecutor said the complainant forgot the N76,000 in the car and the convict, after repairing the car, stole N30,000 from the money.
He said during police investigation, the convict denied, but later confessed to have stolen the money.
Musa had told the court that the offence contravened section 287 of the Penal Code.
