A 62-year-old grandmother, Leimome Cheeks, was arrested for transporting her grandchildren in dog kennels in the back of her vehicle.
She has been charged with two counts of child endangerment after the children, aged seven and eight, were released.
According to the police in Memphis, a city located along the US Mississippi River, the video was shared online showing the two children getting out of pet kennels in the 3700 block of Elvis Presley Blvd Saturday evening.
“There were no air conditioning vents in the back of the vehicle and the children became hot.”
Temperatures in the area reached around 35°C.
A police report said that the children said they were told to get into the kennels because there wasn’t enough room for them to sit in the main part of the vehicle.
However, a local news source WREG reported that neighbours know Cheeks to be a wonderful woman and was unlikely to let the children go through that situation.
One of them, Skylark Blake, said, “Cheeks is a ‘nice lady’ adding that he ‘can’t see her doing that’.”
“I think she needs some help. Something is going on with her. If she did that, then that’s out of character for her,” Eugene Richmond said.
Cheeks was being held Sunday in the Shelby County Jail
