A beggar who had Dh100,000 ($27,225) stashed away in his artificial limb has been arrested in Dubai.

The police recovered from him Dh45,000 and additional Dh55,000 from different parts of his body, making the total amount recovered Dh100,000.

The beggar — an Asian man in his sixties — was picked up by a police patrol on the first day of Eid el-Fitr after the Jumat prayers in Al Quoz, reports Khaleej Times on Wednesday.

On frisking him, the police found Dh25 initially. On searching him more thoroughly, the police recovered the rest of the amount, some of which was in foreign currency.

The beggar had come to the country during the holy month of Ramadan on a visit visa. The police have notified the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners’ Affairs about the company that had issued the visa to him so that legal action can be taken against it.

Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police for criminal investigation, said the Asian was among the 243 beggars rounded up as part of the police’s anti-begging campaign, of which 107 were women.

Out of the arrested beggars, 195 came on visit visas, while the rest had valid residency visas.
