Police in Nyamira area of Kenya are looking for a man who allegedly attempted to kill his wife over what he termed his wife’s failure to give birth to boys.
The suspect, Joash Misati, locked his wife, Rebecca Kerubo and three daughters inside their house in Bonyamatuta Chache location in Kenya, set it ablaze and fled, leaving them for dead, reports Kenya’s Citizentv.
Fortunately, the woman’s eldest daughter, who was in a separate house within the compound, came to their rescue and opened the door before the incident could turn fatal.
The fire could, however, not be contained as the entire house burned to the ground.
Speaking to Citizen TV crew at her home, the woman said they were forced to seek shelter at a neighbour’s house where they spent the night.
“I’m just worried that my entire struggle to build my home is now in ashes and I’m homeless simply because of the archaic Abagusii cultural belief that a woman who cannot give birth to boys has no worth in a home,” she said.
Area Chief, Tesling Okinya, confirmed the incident; saying he is working with the police to have the suspect arrested.
