Martins Ukemezie, a 36-year-old man, was on Wednesday remanded by an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping a teenager who came to sell groundnut to him.

Chief Magistrate, P. E. Nwaka refused to take the plea by the accused but ordered that he should be remanded in prison.

The accused, a spare-parts seller of No. 114 Meiran Road, Meiran, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for rape.

Insp. Christopher John, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 4, at the accused residence.

John said that the Ukemezie called the girl, a 13-year-old, who was hawking groundnut into his house on the pretext that he wanted to patronise her.

“The accused, thereafter, shut the door at the girl, covered her mouth so that the neighbours would not hear her cry and raped her.

“Thereafter, the accused opened the door for the girl who then cried home,” he said.

The prosecutor added that the accused was later arrested by the police.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Nwaka subsequently adjourned the case until July 16 for mention.
