A housewife, Shamsiyya Surajo, on Wednesday dragged her husband, Surajo Abdulkadir, to a Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, over alleged assault.

The petitioner told the court that her estranged husband constantly beats her, adding that, “my husband’s parents and mine had to intervene on several occasions.”

She said that when the beatings became too much, she had to leave the house.

“Our parents prevailed on me to return to my matrimonial home, to which I agreed, but I did not return immediately because my daughter fell sick.

“So when my mother went to tell my husband about my daughter’s ill health, he told her that he had moved my belongings to his parents’ house.

“His father later came to our house and told my mother that his son was no longer interested in our marriage,’’ she said.

The petitioner also said that her husband sibling had not been according her respect because they believed they are older than her.

She asked the court to compel the respondent to return her belongings.

On his part, the respondent denied the petitioner claims and asked the court to allow the matter to be handled by the family members.

The judge, Dahiru Lawal, asked the petitioner if she wants to allow reconciliation as requested by her husband, to which she answered in the affirmative.
