A family is yet to come to terms after hired goons stormed a funeral service and unleashed chaos on the mourners.

This incident happened on Thursday in Awendo, Migori County.

The family spokesman Jackson Odongo said his deceased brother, Edgar Omondi, had a disagreement with a man who claimed to have bought a piece of land where he was to be buried.

“My brother died after a short illness and we suspect the man who has been purporting to have bought his piece of land is responsible for his death. On Thursday while we were burying him, goons stormed the funeral and disrupted the funeral service claiming that my brother should not be buried at the land,” said Odongo.

He said mourners ran for their safety because the goons raided the ceremony armed with crude weapons.

Area chief Simon Ouko said he alerted police officers from Awendo who arrived before the funeral ceremony proceeded further.

He said the goons fled the scene before the police could arrive.

“We must respect the dead. Those claiming to have bought land must come out clear when whoever who has sold the land is alive instead of waiting until one dies to start causing mayhem,” he noted.

Andrew Ayako, an elder condemned the incident and said the man who hired the goons to disrupt the funeral will not be allowed to occupy the land.
