A security guard, Abioye Oluwaseun, has been brought before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing money in his place of work at 21, Osita Onyenwe Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Oluwaseun, who worked with a security outfit in the state, reportedly stole sums of $800 and £100 belonging to a resident, Yvonne Johnson.
He allegedly perpetrated the act between April 25 and June 14, 2018 before luck ran out on him.
The resident, who had been noticing her money missing, was said to have become more curious on June 14 when she returned from an early morning workout and discovered $200 and £100 missing in her apartment.
Saturday PUNCH learnt the woman’s husband approached the landlord to obtain the footage of the Closed Circuit Television installed in the building.
The footage reportedly revealed Oluwaseun sneaking into the apartment that morning while the woman was not around.
Our correspondent learnt the guard stopped coming to work after he got wind of a report that the woman wrote to the company on the incident.
He was later tracked down by policemen from the Maroko Police Division at a restaurant in Sango Ota, Ogun State, where he was having fun with his friends.
The complainant, Johnson, told the police that she initially thought the money was being stolen by one of her domestic workers.
She said, “On April 25, I started noticing that money was missing from my wallet. I initially assumed it was one of my domestic workers that was stealing the money. On May 14, $600 was stolen in my apartment.
“On June 14, 2018, I noticed that another $200 and £100 went missing. Consequently, my husband alerted the landlord to assist us with the CCTV footage. It was after viewing the footage that we discovered it was the security guard on duty who entered into our apartment while I was on morning jogging.
“The security company was promptly contacted. The guard stopped coming to work immediately we notified the organisation.”
The 32-year-old Ondo State indigene in his statement to the police, admitted to have stolen $300 and £100 in the woman’s apartment.
He said, “I was deployed in the woman’s residence on April 5, 2018. I ran away because of the money I stole. I stole $300 and £100. I entered her apartment three times.”
However, Oluwaseun pleaded not guilty when he was charged with stealing before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The police prosecutor, Francisca Job, told the court that the alleged offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The presiding magistrate, Mr. B.I. Bakare, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned the case.
