100 children to undergo free cleft lip surgeries

No fewer than 100 children from Kwara State are to enjoy cleft lip and palate reformatory surgeries.

The Rotary International District Governor in Nigeria, Dr. Mike Omotosho, made this known in a statement.

The Kwara State Government, Rotary International club and a United States-based group, the Alliance for Smiles, are said to be organising the programme.

Omotosho, who is also the Chief Oversight Officer, Sustainable Healthcare Initiative, stated that the surgeries would be performed by surgeons from the US, Australia and Nigeria.

According to him, a team of 17 volunteers, comprising doctors, nurses and other paramedics, will arrive in Nigeria from USA, Canada and Australia on January 8 for the surgeries.

He stated that the exercise would commence on January 10 at the General Hospital, Ilorin.

According to him, cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that occur when a baby’s lip or mouth did not form properly during pregnancy.

Omotosho, who called for the setting up of birth defects registries in Nigeria, added that such a measure would help in determining the country’s birth defects prevalence.

He added that there was an urgent need to invest in children with birth defects in order to reduce neonatal and under-five mortality.
