Fleeing robbers kill cop, one other in Bayelsa

Policeman was reportedly killed Friday night by a gang of armed robbers as they attempted to escape after robbing a woman at Agudama community in Yenagoa Local Government area of Bayelsa State.

The five-man robbery gang also shot dead one Victor Abule, 23, after robbing the woman identified as Evelyn Patrick at about 10 pm on new year’s day in the densely populated Agudama area.

It was gathered that the deceased police officer confronted the hoodlums as they were escaping from the scene of robbery and succeeded in killing one of them.

But the cop was not that lucky as he was reportedly overpowered by the hoodlums, who shot him.

The killed policeman was said to have been rushed to the hospital where he eventually died.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident, saying “on January 1, at about 10pm, a five-man armed robbery gang, robbed one Evelyn Patrick at Agudama, Yenagoa, and shot dead one Victor Abule 23.

“Consequently, as they were escaping, a police officer confronted the armed men and shot dead one of them.

“The officer sustained gunshots injuries, he was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects and investigation is ongoing,” he said.
