THE National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control in Cross River State says it has arrested a suspected counterfeit drug dealer, Mr. Ernest Chubuike, who had been on the agency’s wanted list.
The state Head of NAFDAC, Mr. Isaac Kolawole, who spoke on Tuesday in Calabar, explained that the suspect had been on the agency’s wanted list for about a year.
Chubuike, according to Kolawole, was arrested on February 25, 2016, by two police officers attached to the agency’s office in the state.
He said the suspect had been involved in the selling of fake drugs to pharmacists and chemists in the state without NAFDAC licence.
“Ernest Chubuike has been on our wanted list for almost a year now. He specialises in selling fake drugs to pharmacists and chemists in the state. During his arrest, we recovered from him fake Tramadol 200 milligrams, Buscomac 10 milligrams and Aldomet 250 milligrams.
“We have since handed him over to the police for further actions and he will be arraigned in court soon. We will not stop in our commitment to stamp out fake drugs and adulterated food products in the country,” Kolawole said.
The NAFDAC boss said the agency sealed a bread bakery because of the use of Potassium Bromate in its baking.
According to him, the agency sealed the bakery in March, at the Yakurr Local Government Area of the state, adding that the suspected owner fled on sighting NAFDAC officials.
“We have also arrested and sanctioned a good number of fake sachet water producers in the state this year. Some of them, who could not meet our standard and registration guidelines, were closed down automatically,” he added.
The state NAFDAC head warned those involved in the selling of fake drugs and adulterated consumable products to desist from it, saying anyone caught would face the wrath of the law.
