Men of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested four members of a syndicate which specialises in luring victims on the Facebook and kidnapping them afterwards.
Also arrested was a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps for alleged armed robbery and kidnapping.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ali Okechukwu, told Southern City News these were among other breakthroughs the command had in March, 2016.
Okechukwu explained that the arrests by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, were as a result of information volunteered by the public.
He said the NYSC member on March 22, conspired with another suspect and broke into the lodge of the Igwe’s lodge at Abagana and robbed students of a high institution in the area of their handsets, laptops and cash sum of N92,000.
He said, “On March 6, at about 9pm, four kidnappers, who hailed from Obosi in the Idemili Local Government Area, lured a young lady out of Onitsha Sports Club, via Facebook link, to Oguta Road in Onitsha, where she was kidnapped and taken to an uncompleted building.
“The victim was also kept for days until the ransom of N500,000 was paid. The victim was stripped naked and a video recorded after robbing her of a Samsung Galaxy phone, a blue tab and a wristwatch valued at N90,000.”
He maintained that the other four robbery suspects were arrested for conspiring and robbing one Mr. Ikechukwu Ogeh of N3m cash at gunpoint at the Amansea section of the Awka-Enugu Expressway.
The Police spokesperson said the suspects confessed to the crimes, adding that the police recovered a locally-made shotgun with live cartridges and an axe.
