Police kill suspect in failed bank robbery


The police in Bayelsa State have killed one suspected robber in a failed attempt by a five-man gang to rob a branch of the Stanbic IBTC Bank in Yenagoa, the state capital.

It was learnt that one of the gunmen was killed when they engaged the policemen guarding the bank in a gun duel.

The robbers were said to have scaled the fence of the bank on Monday at about 11pm and opened fire on the cops on duty.

But the policemen, it was learnt, reportedly fired back, hit one of the robbers and killed him instantly. It was gathered that the remaining four robbers fled with gunshot wounds.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Butswat Asinim, confirmed the incident.

Asinim, in a statement on Wednesday, said the corpse of the deceased armed robber was deposited in the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

The state police spokesman said, “On March 27, 2016, at about 11pm, five unidentified gunmen scaled the fence of Stanbic IBTC Bank building at Kpansia, Yenagoa LGA, and opened fire on the policemen on duty.

“The policemen fired back at them, killed one of the gunmen and recovered a single-barrelled cut-to-size locally-made gun.

“The other robbers fled with bullet wounds.

“The corpse of the armed robber has been deposited at the morgue of the the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.”

He said efforts had been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects, adding that investigation was ongoing.
