NAFDAC arrests three, shuts four bakeries in Edo

The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control has sealed off three bakeries for allegedly engaging in unwholesome practice in Benin, the Edo State capital.

NAFDAC also arrested three persons, suspected to be the managers of the sealed bakeries during the inspection exercise.

The affected bakeries were identified as Godswill, Life is Good, Our Daily Bread and Stone bakeries located along Sapkonba road in Benin.

The Edo Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. David West, lamented that most of the bakeries produced unhealthy loaves of bread for unsuspecting consumers in addition to not being registered with the agency.

West said, “We have three teams carrying out this exercise in different locations in Benin today. From the inspection so far, we observed that most of the bakeries are not listed with NAFDAC and they operate under poor hygiene condition.”

While noting that NAFDAC would continue to carry out its mandate of safeguarding the health of Nigerians, he said that the suspects would soon be prosecuted.

He also added that the inspection would be sustained by the agency to ensure compliance in line with the objectives of the agency.

“We have given sanctions and made some arrest and they will be prosecuted,” he added.
