Nsukka mob attacks policeman for ‘killing’ motorcyclist

An unidentified policeman was beaten to a coma after accidentally killing a motorcyclist in the Nsukka area of Enugu on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the policeman was nearly lynched by an angry mob that converged on the scene of the incident before he was rescued by his colleagues.

The policeman, it was learnt, was part of the Nsukka Building Material Taskforce set up to regulate the building materials business in the town.

The taskforce was mandated to compel traders to move to the permanent site of the building material market.

It was learnt that the taskforce officials, including the unnamed policeman, were attacked by a crowd while trying to force a popular cement dealer at the Beach Junction area of the town to pay a fine for not moving his business to the permanent site of the building material market.

In a bid to disperse the crowd, the policemen accompanying the taskforce started shooting into the air.

However, the policeman mistakenly shot dead the motorcyclist, who was going to an unknown destination.

The incident angered the crowd who descended on the policeman and beat him into a state of coma. However, his colleagues rescued him from imminent death.

The policemen also removed the corpse of the motorcyclist and deposited it in an undisclosed mortuary.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the policeman had yet to regain consciousness as of the time of filing this report.

A police source, who did not wish to be named, said efforts were being made to revive the man.

The source added that the policeman would be disciplined whenever he regains consciousness.

The spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said he had yet to receive a report of the incident.

He said he would confirm the development, and get back to our correspondent but he never did as of the time of filing this report.
