Villagers desert homes as cultists invade Imo community


Two rival cult groups operating under the names, ‘Asland and Deegbam’ have invaded Obitti community in Ohaji/Egbema Council Area of Imo State chasing away residents.

The rampaging cult groups in their latest attack took over the entire community after killing one resident and injuring many villagers as well as burning down several buildings belonging to their members.

The situation nevertheless, resulted in villagers deserting their homes in large numbers.

An indigene of the community, Chief Emmanuel Odunze, described the situation as very dire.

He called for an urgent intervention by security agencies and government to forestall normalcy and save lives of the people

“As I speak with you now, the entire community has been deserted,” he said.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Bureau for Niger Delta Affairs, Justus Ojika, condemned the incident while appealing to the villagers to return home and remain calm.

Ojika referred to cases of extortion, threat to life and property in addition to brutal killings in the community.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, said that the State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere and the Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, had visited the area to quell the ravaging crisis.
