Police arraign man for N9.8m fraud

The police in Lagos have arraigned one Abayomi Arodu for allegedly defrauding one Festus Osho of N9.8m on Taiwo Close in the Ifako-Ijaye area of the state.

Arodu was said to have collected the money from the complainant between 2009 and 2011 under the pretext of using the sum to purchase goods for Festus at the Nigeria Breweries Plc.

A police prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, arraigned Arodu in an Ogba Magistrate’s Court on Monday on two counts bordering on fraud and stealing.

Ogu told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 312(1a) and 285(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2011.

The charges read in part, “That you, Abayomi Arodu, sometime between 2009 and 2011 on Taiwo Close, Ogba, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, with intent to defraud, did obtain a total sum of N9,800,000 from Festus Osho under the pretext of using the money to purchase some goods for him at the Nigeria Breweries Plc, and later issued about 12 leaves of post-dated cheques of WEMA Bank which were dishonoured on presentation as a result of insufficient fund, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 312(1a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.
