Tragedy struck in Bauchi State on Sunday when three sisters drowned in a stream in the Darazo Local Government Area of the state.
The siblings reportedly left home to play, but were discovered to have drowned at about 5.30pm.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, said in a statement in Bauchi on Monday that the children were taken to a hospital where they were confirmed dead by a doctor.
The statement said, “On May 21, 2017, at about 8pm, one Samaila Magaji of Konkiel town in the Darazo LGA of Bauchi State reported at the Darazo divisional police headquarters that on the same day, at about 5.30pm, the following children, Aisha Abdulmumin, female, 7; Aisha Abdulmumin, female, 5; and Amina Abdulmumin, female, 3, all of same address, left home to play, but were later discovered unconscious at a nearby stream.
“The police patrol team, attached to the Darazo division, visited the scene and rushed them to the General Hospital, Darazo, for medical attention. Victims were certified dead on arrival by a medical doctor.
“The corpses were photographed and deposited in a mortuary for post-mortem examination, after which they would be released to their relatives for burial according to Islamic rites.”
The PPRO, who said the case was being investigated to ascertain the actual cause of the incident, advised parents and guardians to watch over their children and wards.
“Parents and guardians are strongly advised to caution their children and wards to stay away from streams or rivers in order not to fall victims of drowning, especially during the rainy season,” he said.
