GUNMEN suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have shot and killed a 39 year-old farmer, Mrs. Magdalene Tunar, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The late Tunar was said to be returning from her farm with her husband and two children in Uluoke, near Auchi on Friday when she was killed.
It was learnt that the deceased and her family were approaching their vehicle, which was parked close to their farm, when two armed men suddenly emerged from a nearby bush.
The husband of deceased, Mr. Wilson Tunar, said that his late wife had attempted to inquire to know what the problem was from the armed men when she was suddenly shot in the stomach.
The incident was said to have led to a protest on the Auchi-Okene expressway by some women from Elele-Uzairue in the area on Saturday.
Tunar said, “I usually park my car somewhere along the farm route because of the terrain. So, we were moving towards where I parked when two men suddenly came out of the bush and moved towards us with a gun pointing at us.
“On sighting them, my wife inquired to know what was happening and the next thing I heard was the sound of a gun. They shot her in the stomach.”
According to him, the attackers fled when he engaged them in a fight after the trigger of the gun failed to go off as they tried to shoot at his children.
“When she (deceased) fell, they pointed the gun at my children again and I immediately shielded them behind me to protect them from being shot. It was however a miracle when I heard the click of the trigger, but nothing happened,” Tunar said.
He added, “I grabbed a wood close by and fought them with it and I got injured in the neck by a knife from one of them. They immediately fled when I overpowered them.”
“I had to rush my wife, who was then still alive, to Iyamoh Health Centre for medical attention. We were, however, advised to go to Faith Foundation Hospital close by as they were incapable of taking care of her.”
“Again, at Faith Foundation Hospital, we were referred to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. It was while we were on our way there that she died.”
The Edo North Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Abdullahi Mohammed, confirmed the incident.
“Investigation is on to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and our men are out there to arrest the killers,” Mohammed added.
