A 95-year-old great-grandfather has fulfilled the promise of a grand marriage and dream honeymoon he made to his now 70-year-old wife.
The fulfillment came a record 40 years after they first met.
Turning to his wife of 40 years at the church entrance, Pa Henry Kariuki seemed to reenact his romantic prowess when he said, “Alice, remember that first day we met?
“I promised you a colourful church wedding and honeymoon at a place of your choice. That is where I’m taking you today.”
The couple, who are both advanced in age and have 17 children, exchanged the much awaited wedding vows at the ACK Passenga Church in Nyandarua County, Kenya.
But, contrary to tradition whereby the bride is expected to keep the wedding certificate, after the duo had signed the dotted lines, Pa Kariuki insisted on keeping the document, saying it’s safer in his custody.
Opening his suit’s button and pointing at the inner pocket, the nonagenarian groom told the officiating priest, “It is already safe, as you can see.”
This drew uproarious laughter from the guests.
Limping due to advanced age, Pa Kariuki expressed satisfaction with himself for having not only fulfilled his wife’s much cherished dream, he had also obeyed the government’s directive that every marriage must be legalised in order to be recognised before the law.
He said he wanted to be an example to his children and also to young people in general.
