The incident happened on Friday in Ilu Tuntun, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Omotore was said to have been hacked to death with a machete by his assailant over a disagreement.
The deceased’s wife, Johana, was also attacked by the assailant, losing some of her fingers.
According to a resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the deceased and the killer had always had disagreements over the issue of setting up fire beside the deceased’s house.
Omotore was said to have always complained about the smoke that emanated from the fire.
The resident said, “The man (deceased) had warned the suspect not to set up fire beside his house because anytime he did so smoke always entered his compound. On Friday, the issue came up again and led to a fight between them. The suspect hit the old man with a machete until he became unconscious.
“The deceased’s wife, who was trying to shield her husband from being attacked, had some of her finger cut off by the suspect.”
Another resident, who also refused to reveal his identity, told our correspondent that the suspect was a deranged person.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident.
He said, “Investigations have commenced. We have arrested the suspect. Some people are saying he has a mental problem but that does not mean we should not do our work. We heard that about 12pm (on Friday) an angry mob in the town went to his (suspect) house and burnt it down.”
Joseph added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at a mortuary while the wife was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
