A septuagenarian, Remi Odetunde, who allegedly beat his wife to a pulp, on Wednesday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The 71-year-old pensioner, who resides at 17, Bayo Shodade St., Alagbado, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for assault.

The accused battered his 44-year-old wife, Bernice, and pushed her out of the house, the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Clifford Ogu said.

According to Ogu, the offence was committed on June 15 at the accused’s residence.

“As a result of the beating, she was rushed to a hospital by some neighbours while the accused was arrested.

“The complainant (the wife) told the police that her husband had been beating her at will and that she wanted the case charged to court,” he told the court.

The offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the section provides three-year imprisonment for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
