Fire guts building, sacks 8 families in Lagos

Eight families were rendered homeless on Monday as a bungalow building was razed in Mafoluku area of Oshodi, Lagos.

The fire, said to have started from one of the rooms, was caused by a candle lit by one of the occupants.

It was reported that the said occupant of the room (name withheld) returned from a party staged to celebrate the New Year, drunk at about 11am. He reportedly lit the candle and slept off, only for occupants of the building located on Fadeyi Street to be jolted from sleep by the fire alarm raised.

Some of the occupants reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries as they scampered out of their rooms for safety. While some managed to salvage their important documents and other properties to safer places, others could not.

At the scene, the occupants were seen bemoaning their fate. A daughter to the owner of the building, Miss Bukola Adedokun lamented: “It is indeed a huge disaster for us because we could not take a pin out . But we thank God that no life was lost neither did we have any casualty.”

Another resident who spoke on condition of anonymity hailed the fire service for its prompt arrival. “But for the prompt arrival of the Fire Service, the fire would have spread to other buildings and that would have been catastrophe.

“This is the second building that would be engulfed by fire in this area. The first fire razed a building at Sadiku Street just two days ago. This one was caused by the carelessness of one of the occupants who came home drunk and forgot to put out a lit candle before going to bed,” the source said.
