The Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Transportation Management Authority, Mr. Chris Olakpe, says LASTMA is making moves to partner the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to flush out sellers of cannabis and alcoholic drinks from the motor parks.
Olakpe, a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, spoke on Wednesday during a public education and enlightenment programme organised by LASTMA for articulated vehicle drivers at Naval Park, Marine Beach, Apapa, Lagos.
Olakpe said driving under the influences of drugs and alcohol were major causes of road accidents involving articulated vehicles.
He said, “We are planning to partner NDLEA to flush out those who sell drugs and alcoholic drinks to drivers in our motor parks.
“LASTMA is coming with full enforcement because we are going to include court processes, ticketing, impounding of vehicles and penalising of erring motorists. Those who don’t want to obey the traffic law of Lagos State are in for big troubles.”
Olakpe said the programme was to make sure that articulated vehicle drivers were aware of driving procedures and to advise them to drive with care.
The Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Lagos State chapter, Tayo Aboyeji, said the LASTMA programme would complement the efforts of the association at educating its members.
He said, “If you notice, accidents involving tanker drivers on our roads have reduced drastically and this is as a result of enlightenment programmes such as this.”
