Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kaduna State have arrested a blind man, for harbouring, aiding and abetting a criminal gang allegedly involved in cattle rustling, kidnapping and other crimes in the state.
Muntari Idris, 50, also known as “Barrister” was picked alongside Adamu Mohammed by operatives of the corps at Ungwar-Maigiginya in Igabi Local Government Area of the state following a tip off.
The suspect, who claimed to be a businessman with interests in landed property, specialises in bailing cattle rustlers, kidnappers and other criminals in the state.
However, the suspect denied any involvement in the crimes, the NSCDC’s spokesman, Orndiir Terzungwe, revealed on Monday.
Idris said he was implicated by his accomplice, Adamu Mohammed, who confessed that he had accompanied him (Barrister) many times to secure bail for suspected criminals.
Mohammed explained that most of the suspects bailed by Idris were those detained in connection with cattle rustling, kidnapping among others. He said he was introduced to the suspect by his late boss, noting that after realising what he does for a living, he counseled him but to no avail.
He said, “I wish to duly state that I know my present boss, Barrister − as he is fondly called − to bail offenders, especially cattle rustlers and kidnappers particularly last years.
“He asked me to accompany him to State CID twice and many times to Rigasa Station and each time we did, I discovered that he would bail offenders who I realised were suspects of cattle rustling.”
Mohammed explained further that upon knowing the aim of Barrister’s visits, he declined accompanying him into offices rather he waited outside, leaving him to be led by relations of the suspects to perfect their bail conditions.
He named Alhaji Wada, Muhakimi, Iro also known as Zafi as a few of Idris’ clients.
Meanwhile, the State Commandant of the NSCDC, Alhaji Modu Bunu said the NSCDC has handed over the suspects to the State Security Services for further investigation and prosecution.
