Rival cult groups, Eiye and Ake confraternities operating in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday engaged in a deadly fight over girlfriends and one of them had his genital organ slashed.

In all, six cult members were injured while seven persons, who were arrested, were said to have been detained by the police.

Reports had it that the incident paralysed activities in Sapele and environs as residents scampered for safety amidst flying broken bottles and sporadic shootings.

It was gathered that one of the cult members identified as Raraye, allegedly hit a rival group member’s girlfriend, leaving the atmosphere charged in the process.

It was further learnt that one Okeh Patrick had allegedly made love advances to Raraye’s girlfriend, an action that was planned to be a form of retaliation.

But the State Police Commissioner, Alkali Baba Usman, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said seven of the cultists were arrested and are helping the police in investigation.

While warning that the police would do everything possible to arrest the fleeing cultists, Usman disclosed that the police recovered six battle axes, machetes, and six cut-to-size guns at the scene of the incident, adding that the suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigation.

Investigation, however, revealed that Sapele and environs had recently been a Mecca for cultism and related acts for the past three years with about 26 persons killed in cold blood.

Speaking further, the police boss identified flashpoints of cultism and its related activities as Ogwashi-Uku, Ebus, and some part of Asaba and Okpanam community.
