No fewer than 30 teenagers who were about to be trafficked to neighboring countries for child labour have been rescued by the Enugu command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC).
The Commandant of NSCDC in the State, Stephen Zwali Lar who briefed journalists on the activities of NSCDC in the state from the beginning of 2015 till date, said the command was determined to check such illicit activities.
He stated that operatives of the command raided the hotels where the children were kept and swiftly rescued, handed them over to relevant authorities and arrested the culprits, adding that if the NSCDC operatives had not rescued the teenagers, they would have been trafficked to neighbouring countries for child labour.
While describing 2015 as a busy year going by the activities that took place within the year, he disclosed that the Enugu State Command arrested over 90 vandals for tampering with assets belonging to the Federal Government including pipelines belong to the NNPC.
He expressed dismay that following the recent revival of the NNPC pipelines from Port-Harcourt to Enugu, vandalism suddenly rose to a worrisome level, adding that as a result, the corps responded swiftly to the development leading to the arrest of many culprits.
The Enugu State NSCDC Commandant further disclosed that the command through her Peace and Conflict Resolution Unit mediated and settled many cases ranging from conflict between spouses to other family matters, breach of contract and debt settlement among others.
He said that headquarters of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company{EEDC}was saved from being vandalised when operatives of the corps forestalled breakdown of law and order as the railway community trooped out in their numbers and barricaded the entrance of the office in October this year.
According to him, the protesters were stopped from gaining entry into the complex by NSCDC operatives, adding that they were angry and would not take any excuse on why they should be denied power supply for months thereby frustrating their businesses.
He also disclosed that the Search and Rescue Unit of the corps worked closely with other stakeholders such as Federal and State Fire Service, Enugu State Medical Emergency Response Team, among others in responding to emergencies since the beginning of this year.
