Police accuse fake cop of raping 23-year-old woman

A fake policeman, Idongesit Effiong, was on Thursday paraded by the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman, identified simply as Etete.

Effiong (29) was arrested by men of the state police command on January 17, 2016, in the Ekorinim area of Calabar, the state capital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Eluu, said the suspect committed the crime along with two of his friends who were at large.

Eluu said the victim was raped by Effiong and his two friends on January 17 at an uncompleted building in Ekorinim.

He said, “On January 17, 2016, One Esther Etete, came to the command with a case of alleged rape.

“She complained that she was raped by three men at Ekorinim area of Calabar Municipality.

“Immediately after taking down her statement, policemen swung into action and were able to arrest Idongesit Effiong while two of his friends ran away.

“Effiong was arrested with fake police uniform.

“Further investigation shows that he has been using this fake police uniform to commit heinous crimes in the area.”

According to the PPRO, the police are on the search for the two fleeing suspects.

The police also paraded one Emmanuel Eyo, 23; and Monachi Igbo, 18, for unlawful possession of firearms.

The PPRO said the suspects were using the guns to terrorise residents in the Ekpo Abasi area of Calabar South.

He further said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were completed.

However, the alleged rapist, Effiong, said that he was not guilty of the allegation.

He said he had not seen Etete before, insisting that the allegation was baseless.

“I don’t even know this girl. I have not seen Etete before. This allegation of rape is baseless because I am not guilty of the crime,” he said.
