The Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, Alausa, has said it charged 4,522 hoodlums across the state to court between January and April, 2016, out of which 3,716 were convicted.
The task force Chairman, SP Yinka Egbeyemi, spoke on Friday during a briefing, saying the unit would have zero tolerance for people who contravene traffic and environmental laws in the state.
Egbeyemi noted that attacks by hoodlums would not deter the agency from carrying out its responsibilities.
He said, “Between January 2016 and now, 2,386 motorcycles, which contravened the Lagos State Road Traffic Law by plying restricted routes in the state were impounded.
“After these motorcycles were impounded, we crushed them in line with the directive from the state government.
“Also, 4,522 hoodlums were arrested across Lagos State and 3,716 were charged to court for various environmental offences. They were convicted and jailed with an option of fine and with community service. Eight hundred and six hoodlums were screened out before others were charged to court.”
The chairman added that nine task force officials were attacked by hoodlums in four months, saying the law did not permit the task force officials to use ammunition against the hoodlums.
He said, “The agency carried out a massive operation at Gbagada dump and demolished shanties occupied by hoodlums who terrorised Oworonshoki and Gbagada areas. All those arrested, including a kingpin known as Tallest, have been charged to court.
“The agency suffered attacks from hoodlums during some of these operations. Nine policemen and paramilitary officials were seriously injured. A fake military captain, Edem Duke, has been charged to court and remanded in prison.”
