Ambode, wife seek stronger family ties in Nigeria

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and his wife, Bolanle, on Sunday said terrorism, insurgency and other challenges in the country were caused by poor family ties and values.

The couple spoke at the 2016 Family Day celebration with the theme, ‘Family, Healthy Lives and Sustainable Future,’ at the Lagos House, Ikeja, noting that the family unit remained the bedrock of the society and must not be allowed to disintegrate.

Ambode said many children being raised presently were not raised with strong family ties, adding that such was responsible for the rupturing of global peace.

He said, “Most of the recorded cases of domestic violence in the country today were due to dysfunctional family backgrounds. We are all born into a family and our families shape our lives. Some of the important moments of our lives have taken place within our families.

“It is for this reason that the United Nations places a lot of emphasis on the family as an important factor in human relation; thereby setting aside this day to celebrate the values of family.

“We must, as a matter of urgency, find time to reconnect with our families. Our children, wives and others need us. The family must be together in times of need.”

The governor said the Lagos State Government would continue to provide the needed infrastructure and institutional support for the family.

Ambode’s wife, Bolanle, said the bad behaviours affecting the society were traceable to change in family values which had been on the decline.

She said, “It is in the interest of all to ensure that the family as an institution does not derail from its important functions if we are to build a society that is decent and united.

“The most important legacy we can give to our children is to adequately care for them, inculcate in them societal values, equip them with good morals through education and socialisation and train them in the fear of the Lord.”
