Man, 37, arraigned for trafficking in Edo

A 37-year-old man, identified as Maurine Daniel, has been arraigned before an Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State, for allegedly abducting a 17-year-old girl and forcing her into prostitution.

The prosecutor, C. S. Nnamdi, told the court that the accused with others at large allegedly abducted the teenager in August 2015.

Nnamdi said the accused committed the offence with the aim of taking the victim to Libya for prostitution.

The prosecutor explained that the offence was punishable under Section 16(2) and 14(b) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

The plea of the accused was not taken.

The presiding magistrate, Mr. Williams Aziegbemhin, ruled that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case.

He therefore ordered that the accused be remanded in the prison, adding that the duplicated copy of the case file should be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The case was adjourned till May 6, 2016, for mention.
