Nanny abducts one-year-old boy, steals boss property

The police in Cross River State have launched a manhunt for a nanny, Covenant Bassey, who allegedly abducted her boss’ one-year-old son, David Robinson, in the Satellite Town area of Calabar.

Our correspondent gathered that Bassey, who was employed by the Robinsons on January 2, 2016, allegedly fled her boss’ apartment on Friday.

It was learnt that the incident happened at about 2pm.

Our correspondent gathered that 18-year-old Bassey also stole some property from the house, before leaving with the one-year and five-month-old boy.

It was learnt that when the boy’s father, Ekpedeme, who had gone to pick his twins from school, returned home, he observed that the nanny and David, his third child, were nowhere to be found.

The parents were said to have reported the matter at the Airport Police Division, Calabar.

It was learnt that the police had arrested the mother of the nanny and some other persons, but they claimed not to have seen the runaway nanny.

Speaking, the boy’s father, Ekpedeme Robinson, said the nanny did not have a phone to monitor her whereabouts, as the phone the family gave her got spoilt a week after her employment.

He said, “When I got home on Friday around 2pm, I realised that the nanny had absconded with my one and five-month-old baby, David. The girl is just around 18 years. We have reported to the police, and they are on her trail.

“So far, the police have arrested the mother of the girl, and they have arrested some other people, but they claimed not to know her whereabouts. The nanny used to have a phone which we gave her few weeks after we employed her in January.

“But the phone got spoilt a week after we employed her. She is not an illiterate. She finished secondary school. We believe that the police are working to rescue our boy.”

The boy’s mother, who identified herself simply as Mrs. Robinson, told our correspondent that the runaway nanny took some property from the house before fleeing.

She said, “We employed the nanny on January 2, 2016. She had been very nice and good to my baby. It is only David who is in her care. I also have a set of twins.

“It was when my husband returned from our twins’ school that he noticed the nanny had fled. Nobody saw her when she left. But we observed that she left with some property in the house. She left with clothes and shoes. But she did not go with most of her things. The matter is with the police.”

The Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, John Eluu, said the police were on the trail of the nanny and the boy, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He said, “The case was reported by the father of the boy and the police are still investigating. We cannot give many details for now. The police are on their trail.”
