there was pandemonium in the Ilupeju area of Oshodi, Lagos State, after a bus crushed an okada rider and his passenger to death.

Our correspondent learnt that the okada rider, Aniefuong Udoh, and a passenger, Suleiman Bakare, were both crushed by the LAGBUS around 9am on Monday.

The PUNCH gathered that the LAGBUS was heading towards Oshodi when the accident happened.

Policemen from the Ilupeju division were said to have arrived at the scene to remove the corpses.

An eyewitness, identified only as Anthony, said the bonnet of the LAGBUS was damaged in the crash.

He said, “The accident happened around 9am. The road is actually a restricted route for motorcycles. The okada rider had a male passenger, and he was about overtaking the LAGBUS when the collision occurred. The two of them were crushed by the LAGBUS.

“People who gathered at the scene tried to remove them from under the vehicle, but they were already dead. Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and some policemen from a nearby division were around to clear the wreckage and avert a breakdown of order.

“No damage was done to the LAGBUS. It is sad that the okada riders still used restricted roads.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the deaths, adding that investigation was ongoing.

She said, “The two persons on the motorcycle were knocked down by a LAGBUS. Both died on the spot. The corpses have been deposited at the morgue. The case is under investigation.”

An official of LAGBUS Asset Management Limited, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the deaths, adding that the bus belonged to a company which LAGBUS gave franchise to.

The LASTMA Public Relations Officer, Mahmud Hassan, said he would get back to our correspondent on the incident. He, however, had yet to get back as of press time.
