Berrien County Sheriff, Paul Bailey, said the confrontation took place about 2:25pm ET at the county courthouse in St. Joseph, along the shore of Lake Michigan.
According to NBC News, police were called to a “disturbance” on the third floor of the courthouse in St. Joseph, a town in Berrien County near the Indiana border.
Baily told reporters that he didn’t have details of what actually transpired but that the gunman was killed at the scene.
“We don’t have all the details about what happened or what occurred or how he got the weapon,” Bailey said.
A deputy sheriff, who was injured in the shooting, was transferred to hospital in stable condition.
Several civilians were also said to have been wounded, though the sheriff couldn’t say how many.
The courthouse was evacuated, and people were directed to an emergency shelter that had been set up.
